the hailo method

My philosophy of art making is simple: the work and the self are drafted together. You don't wait to become someone before you write. You write your way into who you are.

Attention is devotion.
Write from what only you notice. Your particular eye is the whole point.
Beauty is a discipline.
Elegance on the page comes from revision, not inspiration. We practice it like ballet: daily, exactly, without apology.
Becoming is the material.
Your reinvention, your longing, the version of you that hasn't arrived yet. That's what we write.

Four sessions

Each session is two hours, live and in person, with writing time, close reading, and feedback.

  1. Nov 15

    Attention

Find the image only you can see, and learn to stay with it long enough to write it.

  2. Nov 22

    Voice

Write in the register you've been avoiding: braver, stranger, more yours.

  3. Nov 29

    Structure

How a long project actually gets built, from drafting a novel and building a literary community from scratch.

  4. Dec 6

    Release

Read your work aloud at a closing salon. Leave with a finished piece and a practice you'll keep.

Who's teaching

I'm Hailey Colborn. I studied English at Princeton, where I earned a certificate in screenwriting and received the A. Scott Berg Fellowship Award, and I founded Hot Literati, a literary community that has brought thousands of readers together online and in person.

I'm drafting my first novel and performing my own music in New York. I teach what I practice: making art as a way of becoming yourself.
